Children’s Park Downtown San Diego

The Children’s park located in downtown San Diego Marina District will receive a much needed $8 million makeover in 2021.

This exciting project is scheduled to break ground in January 2021 with an estimated completion time of 12 to 18 months after it starts.

Update on September 2022: The park is still under construction!

The new plan calls for a forest themed play structure, a picnic area, a vendor kiosk, adult exercise equipment, an off-leash dog park, public restrooms and a walkway over the existing pond.

In an interview with the San Diego Union Tribune Heidi Vlonbum (who oversees environmental policy) said:

“The plan … allows for a lot more innovation than the prior standards provided for. When we’re only looking to expand space, it really limited our capacity to adapt to new recreational opportunities, experiences and trends that people want to see,” said Heidi Vonblum, who oversees the city’s environmental policy. “This allows for that innovation to occur, even if we don’t know what those new recreation trends may be 10 or 20 years from now.”

This much needed makeover will add lots of value to the surrounding community in the Marina District, in terms of downtown real estate the buildings in the immediate vicinity of the park will be the ones that benefit the most, these buildings include The Pinnacle, Cityfront Terrace, Horizons, Harbor Club and Renaissance.
